Personal Top Ten artists in Hip-hop and R'n'B.....

There has been a range of artist within the field of R’n’B and Hip-Hop that I think have brought something to the table and have made their mark in the music business. Check out my personal top ten:
(1)  Michael Jackson; Ok, this is probably obvious but it has to be said. Despite the fact that he had been overshadowed by negative publicity that almost destroyed his reputation. No-one can deny the legacy that MJ left behind. Michael Jackson, known as the King of Pop has been one of the most influential artists within popular culture. Hits such as Billie Jean’ and ‘Thriller’ were credited for transforming music to an art form and made popular the dynamic music channel MTV. MJ’s 1982 album Thriller is known to be the best-selling album of all time. His sense of style and off beat performance has brought to record some of the most amazing sounds and moves, such as the infamous ‘Moonwalker’. Michael Jackson was never afraid to stand out from the crowd and show off his unique style, with this he transformed the sound of music and inspired many of the popular artists to date within the genre of R’n’b, Hip-hop, Pop and Rock.
(2)  Tupac: Noted as one of the most successful rap artists of all time. Not afraid to speak his mind, his music challenged and dealt with taboo subjects, such as ‘Brenda’s got a baby’. Not only known as a lyrist genius who set alight the rap world but he was also a social activist. Tupac used his music to constantly educate and empower individuals with his thought provoking words.
(3)  Eminem: Bursting into the scene with his alter ego ‘Slim shady’. Eminem proved himself to be more than that ‘blond white boy’ trying to make it within the notorious world of Hip-hop. We have seen him mature into a force to be reckoned with from ‘Slim shady LP’ to the most recent ‘Recovery’. Most known for his controversial songs, Eminem has been praised and recognised for been a quality lyricist and is known to be one of the best-selling rap artists of all time.
(4)  Jay Z: He is noted to be one of the most financially successful Hip-Hop artist and entrepreneurs in the US. He has been a consistent Hip-hop artist recording hits from the early 90s to this present day. He brought us ‘Reasonable doubt’ and ‘The Blueprint’, which are noted to be iconic albums in the history of Hip-hop.  Jay Z also became one of the first Hip-hop artists to feature in the Glastonbury festival, primarily recognised for Rock artists, despite heavy criticism against a Hip-hop artist featuring in Glastonbury Jay Z silenced critics with a remarkable performance. Jay Z has been able to cross-over and tap into other genres reaching a wide variety of people with his music.
(5)  Mary J Blige: Noted as the Queen of Hip-hop soul understandably she brought us the ‘441’. She has enjoyed a decade of soulful hits. MJB has touched many women, including myself and even men with her powerful songs that are able to reach deep within, she has always been able to tap into those raw emotions and use them to create songs that are touching and inspiring.
(6)  Beyoncé: The one and only Ms ‘Bootylicious’ herself. She has been a force to be reckoned with, since her departing of Destiny’s child. She has been able to create herself as a successful solo artist. Continuously representing and empowering women with hits such as ‘Girls who run this world’ and known for her sassy and stylish performances: Miss Beyoncé is one Kick-ass performer.
(7)  Mariah Carey:  Best-selling female artist during the 90s; with an incredible vocal range; with her ability to hit those pitch perfect high notes. She was also able to make a powerful comeback in 2005 with the release of ‘The Emancipation of Mimi’ after suffering from a personal emotional and physical breakdown and the departure from record labels Colombia and Virgin records. Mariah Carey proved she was still able to pull out record breaking hits, such as ‘We belong together’ from the album Emancipation of Mimi, which became the most successful solo single of her career and was later declared by Billboard single of the decade.
(8)  Whitney Houston: Well what can I say that already hasn’t been said about the remarkable Whitney Houston? One of the all-time best selling female artists, she is the ultimate Diva. Whitney was born into the world of music, inspired by her mother Cissy Houston; a gospel artist, Cousin Dionne Warwick& honorary Aunt Aretha Franklin. Often referred to as “The Voice”, her soulful and powerful voice allowed her to record phenomenal songs such as “I will always Love you”. Her beautiful and show-stopping performances influenced and inspired a range of successful female artist today.
(9)  R Kelly: Not only is he an amazing artist but he is also a pretty great songwriter too. He is often referred to as the King of R’n’B, with good reason! Recording a string of successful hits such as; ‘Bump n’ grind’ and ‘I believe I can fly’. R Kelly has been recognised as one of the most successful R’n’B male artists to come about, multi-talented as a songwriter and producer making hits for a range of artists in the field of Gospel, R’n’B, Hip-hop and Pop.
(10)                Joe: Ok, so this is probably not an obvious choice but he is probably one of my favourite R’n’b artists of all time! Notably he has not seen the same mainstream success as the likes of R’n’b crooner Usher but am definitely not going to compare the two! Joe has to be of the one of most consistent r’n’b artists, stringing out hits since the 1990’s. His third album ‘My name is Joe’ released in 2000, has been his most successful albums to date and this was also the first to make an impression outside the US, which released the popular ‘I wanna know’ (my all-time favourite) and ‘stutter’.

Style Inspired! - Summer 2012

So here we are in the midst of the summer season. As the sun emerges, this is the part where we get excited and whip out all our best summer clothes. This year’s summer season brings us floral prints, pastels and bold vibrant colours. And I have to admit I have been swept away: for this summer I intend to revel in my femininity.
Style Inspired.
I have to admit that I have always had a thing for ‘old skool’ fashion; I am inspired by the fashion styles of the 50s/70’s/80’s and 90s. For this summer season, 50’s retro fashion is back in.
The fifties was a time of elegance and femininity and the revolution of the 70s brought a more dramatic and youthful style. So am thinking Miss Candy meets Hippy Chic! A blend of pastels; candy pink/baby blues, lush lilac and flower power prints.
Think; 50’s style: Shift dresses/skirts, A-line skirts, wrap dresses, halter neck circle/pencil dresses. Combined with ballet pumps or high-heeled court shoes.
70s style: Maxi skirts/dresses, wide-leg/flared/bellbottoms/palazzo trousers. Combined with platform shoes and wedges.

Remembering the Greats......

There are many great musicians out there today that I am in awe of right now who are hitting the mark but I have to confess that I am a bit of an ‘old skool’ girl and I believe in celebrating all the greats that have come before that has inspired all these new artists.
On Sunday 12th February, I woke up to the news of Whitney Houston’s death. This I find to be a great loss to the world of entertainment despite her troubles I believe that Whitney Houston has been a remarkable force within the music industry and her music should be remembered. So let us not dwell on all the encounters that came upon these artists but reflect upon the music they left us with.

                                                       Whitney Houston

"I Wanna Dance with Somebody" was the first single from Whitney's second album Whitney, released in 1987. It became a commercial success and won her a Grammy award for Best female Pop vocal performance at the 30th Grammy awards.
This has to be one of my favorite Whitney songs, it always has the instant ability to make me smile. I remember falling in love with this song from the first moment I heard it, I used to put on my best Whitney style and dance away. This song has a great up-tempo beat, with that feel good feeling and a disco vibe that leaves you instantly wanting to get your groove on. So thank-you Whitney for making us want to dance with that special somebody. (R.I.P. Whitney Houston)

                       Michael Jackson

"Remember The Time" was released in 1992, as the second single from Michael Jackson's eight studio album; Dangerous. The video was showed as a short film, featuring appearances by Eddie Murphy, Iman, Magic Johnson and The Pharcyde.
OK, so this is not the most obvious of choices of songs but what can I say it blew me away, mid-tempo beat with a combination of piano and guitar instrumental. Watching the video I was mesmerized by Michael Jackson's ability to create magic on screen, and personally I have a thing for Egyptian culture so I was in awe of the great fashion pieces put together, entwined with the imaginative choreography.

                             ETTA JAMES

"At Last", was released in 1960. The song became her 'signature song'. What can I say about the remarkable Ms Etta James, she had pure soul. When I first heard this song, it just touched me..the vocals alone was pure class. This song is beautifully sang and arranged, with touching lyrics. A true classic.

Music Review....

Am sure if asked of highlights of 2011 in the entertainment world the tragic death of Amy Winehouse and Beyoncé revealing her pregnancy during her performance on the VMA would probably go down on the list, as the news that everyone was talking about but I would say there were other interesting factors. Here is just a few that I recollected.
·         Return of Jenny from the Block.
Ok so I admit that by now after all the comebacks this one was not an utter surprise. But J.Lo has always been able to deliver catchy upbeat tunes that have been a commercial success. She returned with popular smash hit On the floor ft. Pitbull fused with the sound of dance, electro pop and Latin beats. This is a great up-tempo dance tune  and I enjoyed the collaboration with Pitbull and even though it has been cited as one the most popular songs of 2011 it took a while for it to grow on me and that was mainly because it is such a catchy tune, it’s hard to get out of your head. I much prefer her hit collaboration with Lil Wayne; I’m into you, a mixture of pop and r’nb, also a hint of her Latin background. Am feeling the deep beats and the clever wordplay employed through both Jlo’s and Lil Wayne’s lyrics. By the way did you know I’m so into you is also written by Taio Cruz.
·         Kelly Roland
Ok so everyone adores Beyoncé but I have to admit Kelly has always been one of my favourites too. Often enough not really given the credit she deserves as a star of her own making. In 2011, Kelly brought us the XFactor, in this I mean in literal and metaphor terms. Placed as one of the judges in Xfactor, Kelly wowed us with her own “swagga”; who could forget her styled comebacks “Putting it down”.  She also released her third album, Here I am which penned out successful hit Motivation ft Lil Wayne (who by the way looks the guy to make a collaboration with), a smooth r’n’b slow jam, slightly up-tempo during Lil Wayne’s rap. The song has also been remixed several times by other artists such as Busta Rymes, Trey songz, fabulous, R.Kelly and Mario. And I must say that this has to be one of the sexiest songs of 2011.
·         Jessie J
This has to be one of my favourite female artists of 2011. Sassy and bold, she modernised the Spice’s girl’s ‘Girl power’ with her debut single “Do it like a dude”, a combination of pop, r’n’b, Hip-hop melodies.  This was followed with another smash hit, “Price tag” ft. B.O.B mixing elements of pop, r’n’b and reggae. She released her debut albulm “Who you are” in febrauary, which featured a string of up-tempo, positive and inspiring songs, such as Nobody’s perfect and titled album Who you are.
·         Dappy
Ok this is not the most obvious act for me; after all he has been more famous for his funky dress sense and controversial behaviour. But it looks like Dappy is all “grown-up” now and after taking a break from band N’Dubz, he made his debut solo single with ‘No regrets’; a fusion of R’n’b and hip-hop and I got to admit I was impressed. The single features inspirational lyrics (which I said was a surprise), blended with a gospel production and piano melodies. This is a feel good song; it will be interesting to see if he can keep on this path.

What does Style mean to you?

I remember the first time I came across "Ugly Betty"...I was instantly intrigued and curious to see how the show would pen out. The storyline was based around Betty, a "plain-Jane” who enters the world of fashion through 'Mode' magazine - "the bible of the fashion industry". As I watched the first series, I remember instantly been drawn to Betty's character despite her apparent fashion faux - who could forget the ever favourite 'Poncho' - still I was attracted to her positive outlook and smart approach. And Despite been continuously mocked for her fashion taste Betty prevailed in her own unique style.
Coco Channel once stated that, "Fashion fades, style remains the same". She made a valid point.  I think we can all learn something from "Ugly Betty"; style is something that allows us to express our individual sphere, it is reflective of our identity and culture. Fashion constantly evolves and is always imitating, reflecting the latest trends and culture.
Growing up I was such a tomboy - much to my mother's distaste. I constantly lived in t-shirts and jeans (total 90s baby!)...I slung my jeans. Rocked out in my trainers or boots and lived for my funky little t-shirts. It was only until I hit college that I began to crave a new sense of style, a new identity (as you do when entering a new phase in life). My girlfriends inspired me - they were totally chic and I began to long for the "ultra chic" look too. I guess here begun my real transformation. Through a period of time I recreated my look and begun to settle into my own sense of 'style'. I was inspired by my culture, my friends and trends that moved around me. It wasn't just one thing; it was little pieces of everything that moulded together. That brought me into me!
I had the craziest little outfits but I can look back at it and smile, as I was able to put together all these different outfits with the most memorable moments...
It’s not just about what you can see in the window shop, it’s what you can take from it.  What you can create from it. That's what style means to me.
